2 monitors connected to a laptop?

Have a laptop that has only one HDMI output, is there a way to connect two monitors via a distributor? The screens should serve as an extension and not show the same picture. (I've also been looking for an adapter from USB 2.0 to HDMI, does the graphics deteriorate?)
