Laptop without RAM?

My laptop (windows 10) no longer starts. It gets stuck when booting up and the message 'PC diagnosis is in progress' is displayed.

Is it because I don't have any RAM or is it soldered?

Does anyone know why it might not start and how to fix it?

Did you just wait for the diagnosis?

Is there a 2nd slot for RAM?

Ma

I've already let my laptop run for 3 days. Nothing happens.

Dr

Your computer will not start without memory. In a notebook there's partially soldered RAM and, if necessary, additional banks for inserting additional RAM modules.

Ma

Look at the picture. Do you think I have soldered RAM?

Dr

I only see one slot for a RAM module. Another module could be soldered or plugged in elsewhere or on the other side of the main board. If your notebook worked at an earlier point in time even though there was no RAM module in this slot, there will be RAM somewhere.

In my Lenovo ThinkPads, the RAM slots are also on both sides of the board. One position can be reached directly via a service flap, the rest, however, is under the keyboard. I can't say how it is now with your notebook. To do this, I would first have to know the technical data.

Ma

I just googled, a RAM is soldered into place. What else can it be that it doesn't start?

Dr

Remote diagnosis is always difficult as there can be many causes. What do you see when you switch on your notebook? Does anything appear at all? Is your notebook making any beeping noises?

Ma

Nothing beeps. I only see 'PC diagnosis in progress' or 'Preparing for repair'. That comes in a continuous loop. I've let it go through for several days but nothing else happens.

Dr

If Windows 10 gets stuck in this "loop", you should boot from a Windows 10 USB stick to start the system diagnostics and repair. If that doesn't help either, I would back up the data if possible and completely reinstall Windows 10.

Ma

Can I also install windows 7? I can handle that better. 😅 I don't know anything about it. How do I do that?

Dr

Whether you can install Windows 7 depends entirely on the notebook and the manufacturer's driver support. However, since Microsoft completely stopped support for Windows 7 at the beginning of the year, I would advise against it.

I'm not familiar with it. How do I do that?

On another notebook or desktop PC, download the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website. You can then use it to download the current Windows disk image. Either as an ISO image or ready and bootable unpacked on a USB stick with at least 8 GB of space.
