Is something broken if only a part is broken?

As an example, if a part of a laptop doesn't work then the laptop is broken

br

Well only the part is broken.

If the tire of a car is broken, the whole car is not automatically broken.

Em

That depends on what you mean by broken?!
If part of your laptop is broken, the rest can still work, but the device itself (the laptop) is defective and can no longer be used to its full extent.

To stay with WillEsWissen64's example:
If a tire is broken on a car, the car can no longer drive properly and is therefore considered to be defective.

For the rest, the question and the choices are for the cat.

Cu

It makes a difference whether we're talking about the rubber foot on the rear left or the motherboard.

Can the device be used (for its original purpose, not as a fly swatter)?

Ca

Let's just say the start button itself is broken, the rest of the way is not broken, then it counts

br

No.

Only when the damage exceeds the residual value can one say that it is "broken".

For me too, broken is a flexible term. Of course the device has a defect, it is popularly… Broken, but not for the bin.
