My son (5) fiddled with my laptop in my absence and now instead of the desktop with all the icons and folders, I always have the start menu in front of my nose! I've tried everything but I can't get rid of it. What can I do.

The start menu can be shown and hidden with the Windows key. If your son has managed to keep the menu open permanently, then he is a superhuman for 5 years because I don't even know how to do it! He's definitely a hacker 😂
