Win 10 is on my laptop and I want to install Linux on another partition. Unfortunately, my bios is lured, since the laptop comes from ebay and I could not call the seller the password.
Is it still possible to install a second OS without having access to the BIOS?
Laptop: Thinkpad X250
Why do not you ask the manufacturer support, if and how the BIOS can be unlocked?
If you are lucky, the UEFI / BIOS settings are already set so that you can continue working with the part (no secure boot, boot devices other than HDD / SSD allowed).
If I'm not mistaken, you get with IBM / Lenovo boxes with F12 in the boot menu (device selection).
Otherwise, a search suggestion: "thinkpad x250 supervisor password". - Unfortunately, I do not know how it is solved with the device, but removing a simple CMOS battery and waiting for the UEFI boxes does not work anymore.
I already researched. There's no way but to replace the entire motherboard, which costs almost as much as I paid for the laptop.
I've researched for a long time and came to the conclusion that I live with it. I can see how the said BIOS settings are set.
So secure boot is disabled and boot order lock too.
I would just suggest trying. In the boot menu, select the USB stick with EFI entry and wait to see if the distribution boots. You should definitely get some instructions on how to restore the bootloader (probably GRUB) if needed. Windows 10 likes to override other bootloaders for updates.
Can't dial the boot drive without entering the correct SVP. Pity Renate.
The bios do not need eigtl. The boot menu is sufficient (is something separates with my Thinkpad & opens with F11).
Should not go the boat menu:
unplug internal hard drive & connect / insert the Linux installation medium. Only this installation medium may be bootable. Everything else has to be separated!
Then turn on the Thinkpad. Now Linux should start. Once it has started the internal hard drive where Windows is on it is connected externally via USB (with an adapter). Now install Linux and set up the dual boot.
Then turn off the Thinkpad, reinstall the hard drive, disconnect the installation media & restart the Thinkpad.
