VHS videos Digitizing and importing to a laptop?

I have a VCR on which I can play the tapes and a device digitized. As an output, I have an HDMI cable. Can I connect directly to the laptop and import? Later I want to burn that to DVD. Is that possible?

No, your laptop almost certainly has only one HDMI output. You would need a USB interface, with which you can "grab" the HDMI signal.

Make sure that your laptop has at least USB 3.0, I'm afraid that the data rate of USB 2.0 will be too low for a 1080p60 signal.

For this purpose you need a video grabber that digitizes the analog picture signal.

And since you only want to digitize a PAL signal (720x576, 25 FPS), no USB 3.0 is necessary. Only the computer should be fast enough to perform the coding in real time. But that should not be a problem today.

Of course you need to have a recording program, or a video editing program with recording function. Sometimes something simple (!) Is included with these grabbers.

Some programs support only the outdated MPEG1 or MPEG2 format. MPEG2 was used on DVDs.

Much recommendable would be the MP4 format (codec H.264), which is used in Blurays and has only about 1/4 of the file size of an MPEG2 movie.

There you have to look what you have there, or if you want to buy a commercial program (about 70-100 euro).

There are also free video editing programs, but I'm not familiar with them. So I do not know what they can do. I've heard of "ShotCut", but there are many more.

If you have little to digitize, then you can save yourself all the trouble and take a professional service provider. Since then you get everything ready on DVD, Bluray, or data stick. And of course as a pure video file for your own post.

Is not it, when I digitized my VHS collection, there was no UB3.x

Many Thanks. I've checked everything and am now so far that I go to the pro. It would be too bad if something breaks.

Ar

Thank you. I give up!

If I understand you correctly, you have a device that digitizes. What's wrong with that?

Was also a mistake of mine. No sense in VHS natively to record a resolution of 1080p, if the VHS does not even offer such a level of pixels. Presumably enough for the VHS 1/4 of the resolution.
