Set up your laptop as a present - without a Microsoft account?

I bought my mother a laptop and now I wanted to get it ready for her to go. The laptop came preinstalled with Windows 10 in S mode and can be changed to Windows 10 Pro for free. This is required to install Firefox or Linux on the device.

The problem: I have to do the whole thing with an account that sends data to Microsoft that I don't really want there.

Is there an alternative or do I really have to bite the bullet?

(Log in briefly, install everything required, then possibly switch to Linux and delete the Microsoft account, for example I could imagine)

My mother only wants to use the laptop to write documents (texts), stream videos and films on YouTube and other platforms and to check emails. Every now and then maybe a quick search on the internet, but nothing else.

To do this, of course, she needs a writing program. Where can I find FREE writing programs that don't require registration? Does that even still exist?

You can create an offline account, it is no longer that easy but still possible. To do this, you must have deactivated the WLAN when setting up. You will then be presented with the option for an offline account. You have to click your way through.

You can use the wordpad to write, it can't do much. Maybe it would be smarter to invest the 7-10 euro in office

Unfortunately, a few months ago, Microsoft removed the option of setting up Windows without an online account. Sorry

The method described here may still work:

So I can highly recommend LibreOffice, a free writing program. Has very good compatibility with MS Office, is open source and significantly more user-friendly than the junk product from Microsoft.

If you don't like that, OnlyOffice is still available. Personally, I don't think that's that good, but it also seems to work great.

Thank you!

Thank you!

As I understand it, I unfortunately need an account to install Windows 10 Pro, which then allows me to download another browser and LibreOffice and another operating system (Linux, if desired)?

So you can install Linux like this. It's on a different partition and has nothing to do with Windows.

For the other: I have no idea. Sorry For reasons such as these, I haven't used a Windows system for years.

Linux can be installed as a dual boot on the computer. You can choose to start the computer with either Windows or Linux.

You can also install Linux so that Windows 10 is cleaned from the disk.

Or you can install Linux in Windows in a virtual machine. A very elegant solution.

Libreoffice is free office software that is available for both Windows and Linux.

Your mother would be best served with a Linux system like OpenSuse, Ubuntu, etc.

OpenSuse Leap 15.2 can be installed quickly, safely and conveniently. Also as a dual boot.
