Laptop still useful?

I have a very old Sony Viao brand laptop with an i2, 2gb ram and win vista. I want to continue using it but it's way too slow and it hangs on a lot, how do I make it run smoothly or are its best days over?

With 2 GB, unfortunately, everything is now considered a rather lame crutch.

To rebuild the operating system or to swap it for a lean Linux distribution (since there's no support any more and malware is thus open to the public) should be the biggest gain in performance.

Whether additional memory / makes an SSD makes sense, one may doubt more in view of the age.
