IPad useful in addition to laptop?

I would have a short question for everyone who has had experience with it or who has already been in the same situation.

I'm currently using a pad and my laptop to work in and outside of the university. Now I'm considering whether it would be of added value to buy an iPad in addition to the laptop (Macbook) instead of the college block. I'm just not quite sure how useful it would be.

Has anyone had any experience in this regard? And is it better to write on the iPad than on paper?

I have a surface and for me it is much better than on paper.
