Is the Debian GNU / Linux an operating system for the desktop area?

Many use Debian on their server. Is it also suitable for the desktop computer or for the laptop or does it have disadvantages compared to it?

When should you use Debian on the desktop?

It depends a little on the version. Debian Stable (which is often used on servers) is, as the name suggests, super stable, which is also due to the fact that there are very few updates, so the software is in rather outdated versions.

Example: Debian Buster (the current stable version) comes with Firefox 60.7.2, currently Firefox 71.0. On a desktop system I personally would like to have the latest software, even if one or the other stupid update leads to minor problems.

That is why I use Manjaro Linux on the desktop, for example, which always provides the very latest software. On my Raspi, on the other hand, which only works as a server in the local network, the Debian-based Raspbian runs and does its job wonderfully.

It depends on the wishes - Debian (IMHO rightly) is said to be very conservative. That not every sh. Adaption is certainly good, but sometimes you have to wait for things unnecessarily long.

With Debian you don't get a bleeding edge, but it should normally be stable and robust.

Do you have any examples?

The adaption of udev had taken a long time back then. I found that ugly because I saw a certain benefit in it for certain things (reproducible symbolic interface names based on known factors).

Otherwise I have been away from Debian too long to remember the other quarrels:-).

Not desktop related, but from Debian 7 to 8 there was no cluster stack for quite some time. That was discreetly unfavorable and has, for example, Made sure that we left Debian entirely.

In principle, didn't you ever ask the same thing?

The advantages for a server system are exactly the disadvantages for many desktop users.
Because on the desktop you want to create, edit and consume current media, which is contrary to the use of a server.

It is always good if you don't want to do any or only a few multimedia things. But especially when a wealth of features is much less important than uncompromising stability.
