Get laptop BIOS password?

I tried installing Windows 10 on my parents' laptop yesterday. These have a HP zBook 15, which they bought 2 years ago. So I have created a bootable USB stick with Win10, plugged in, booted from the stick, everything previously deleted in the setup and installed Win. This now fails when starting always missing "winload.exe".

I also found the error, the BIOS was too old, so I wanted to update this, but this has now a password for HP and since it is a "business laptop", the method works incorrectly with 3x PW.

So I already wrote the support, which sent me the SMC.BIN to reset the laptop. There, however, always appears "SMC command failure" which excludes the other error sources mentioned by HP can only be that the previous owner had removed the CMOS battery.

I'm then recommended to do all this through HP_Tools, which is hard to start without Windows. HP only writes: "Use the method on the HP_TOOL partition, if it does not exist you can create it using the following link:

http://www8.hp.com/...diags.html "

Which means that I do not have an Ahunung what I can do now.

Try as password times admin or 0000 or 1234

Thank you for the answer, but no it's not that easy. Otherwise HP would not make such a drama with the SMC.BIN extra for the number of THIS laptop ^^

Gu

OK, too bad.

On the page you mentioned, you can load a tool when Windows no longer boots.

Do you also look here: https://support.hp.com/.../c03801890

… And here:

Possibly. Can you also on HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS 4-IN-1 USB KEY (there's also on the page you mentioned what to do.

First of all thank you! I had also told HP again how I could do the whole thing. They answered:

"Install the HP PC hardware Diagnostics to your hard drive, which will create the partition for you - http://www8.hp.com/...diags.html

or manually creating the partition as follows:

1. Use a partition tool like Partition Magic to create a partition on a hard drive that has a system partition with the following characteristics.

Partition type: FAT32

Partition size: 2 GB

Volume name: HP_TOOLS

2. In the new partition, create a folder called HEWLETT-PACKARD.

Then copy the SMC.bin file to the root directory of the newly created HP_TOOLS partition. "

Only there I do not know how to do this without Windows. I had already downloaded the hardware diagnostics UEFI on the website, but I did not find out how to create a partition, or make a folder there, in which I can then pack the SMC.BIN. HP did not help because they said in the mail only what I can do, but how exactly I still do not know.

For creating / changing the partition you either have to

a) install a partitioning tool on a bootable USB stick. Then boot from USB stick.

b) Alternatively, you can also create a bootable Windows USB stick. Windows has already installed a partitioning tool (diskpart).

c) Or - if you have a Windows installation CD - you can boot directly from the Windows CD. Then continue working with diskpart

Do you have the old Windows partition still available, or have you already deleted all the data. Is there a backup of the laptop? In this case, you could reset the laptop via Restore back to the old state.

For a) and b) you logically need a working Windows computer…

"Besides, I do not know how to do it without Windows."

Take the bootable USB stick created by you and boot the computer. Then boot into the admin console and use diskpart. All commands for diskpart are available e.g. Here:
