Install a new SSD in the laptop and reinstall Windows

I want to make a laptop (HP) that is quite slow and has a 1TB HDD faster by replacing the hard drive with the new SSD. I have already ordered a suitable SSD and prepared a Windows 10 boot stick. (I don't want to keep any old data and set up Windows from scratch)

I'm not exactly sure I'm doing this right, so I'll write how I would do it. If I forget something and do it wrong, I would be happy to receive tips and suggestions for improvement.

• 1: I reset the PC to the factory settings so that all data are deleted (do I then have to do something with the old HDD that has been removed? I actually don't need it anymore)

• 2: I remove the battery, unscrew the laptop and remove the old HDD and put it aside

• 3: I insert the new SSD and close the back of the laptop again and insert the battery again

• 4: I start the laptop, connect it to the charger and hope that the stick is automatically recognized and boots. If this is not the case, I press F10 or other function keys to get into the boot menu, where I then select the USB stick.

• 5: I'm installing Windows 10, enter my purchased Windows 10 license code

• 6: When I'm on the desktop, I install all important programs and the drivers

That's how I would do it, but I'm not entirely sure if that's the right thing to do. If I did something wrong or forgot, I would be very happy to receive a suggestion for improvement…

I'm not familiar with laptops, but on a PC the SSD and HDD are different sizes. Are you sure that it even fits?

di

SSDs are usually smaller, which is why switching from an HDD to an SSD should not be a problem. The connection remains the same and in the event that the plate can't be screwed tight, there are removable frames.

Fe

Yes, it is a 2.5 inch HDD / SSD. So that fits.

cu

Yes, I just watched a video about it, thought that maybe something doesn't fit with the connections or something. But everything's okay!

Much superfluous. You can leave the battery inside. And you don't need factory settings either. Out with it - end.

As a tip, I would open an Outlook account. Your license will be saved there. Or have you already paid anyway?

Fe

OK thanks. That means I don't need to reset the laptop at all, I just have to remove the old HDD?
I haven't bought a license yet, if I would buy a Windows 10 Home license from MMOGA. But how exactly do you mean with the Outlook account?

ar

Then sign in to Outlook.com. Surf around a bit - log out. Then SSD in. Register again in the outlook account. Voila your license is activated. Has to be home to home, of course, or pro to pro

Fe

OK thanks. I just noticed that as far as I know there's no Outlook on the laptop… Then it doesn't work, does it?

ar

Hotmail and msn will probably work too
