I have an old laptop where the hard drive is scrap. I have still ne old formatted 240GB SSD lying around and now wants to bring Windows 7 on the old laptop. So I connected the SSD to my computer via USB 3.0 and tried to install windows on the SSD but the setup tried to load Windows 7 on my main board on it where I do not need it. How can I bring Windows 7 to the SSD to equip my old laptop with Windows 7?
Update: Nothing starts from the SSD, but I played with the software Rufus, Windows 7 on a USB stick and let the laptop boot from the stick and he recognizes it and starts from the stick but then I see only a black screen in its upper left corner a white cursor blinks. What are they?
Standard procedure:
Load Microsoft's Media Creation Tool and create a USB stick to install Windows.
Insert SSD into the notebook and install it with the USB stick there Windows, if necessary, USB must be set as the 1st boot option.
McGyver:
Install SSD in your computer, remove all other SSDs / HDDs or remove cables
Install Windows 7 on the SSD (with the USB stick or a CD)
Turn off the power switch the first time during installation
Install SSD in the notebook
I do not quite understand. You want to use now only an external hard drive?
Here's a video showing how you can use an external hard drive as an internal hard drive.
You need to read the productkey for your operating system from your old hard drive.
Then you have to download the ISO file of Windows 7 from the Internet (first you have to enter the key).
Then you have to make a USB bootable with a program and put the ISO file on it.
Finally, you have to set in the BIOS, that the laptop from your USB stick to boot. You install Windows and pull the USB stick after installation.
Windows (whichever) on external disk: Can't.
Exchange the internal hard drive in the laptop with the SSD and you will be able to install Windows. But you should better take Windows 10, otherwise you may repeat the procedure next January.
Or the laptop from then never again to the Internet.
For Windows 7, the Media Creation Tool is not available.
Problem Summary: I could not install Windows 7 because, oddly enough, my laptop could not read or run any operating system from whatever boot media.
Solution to the problem: I installed Windows 10 on the laptop with the Microsoft Media Tool via USB stick, that worked. Then I have Windows 7 normally stored on a second partition and can choose when booting between Windows 10 and Windows 7. (I'm using Windows 7 because I do not have a license for Windows 10.)

Nice that it works.
Now you have practice to repeat the coming January or to disconnect your computer forever from the Internet.
