Downloads too slow despite fast internet?

We got 1000Mbits of internet from Vodafone and it's relatively fast on my older laptop at around 40MB per second. Nevertheless, downloads of more than 1GB take several hours via the Chrome browser. What could be the reason?

And how can I fix the problem? I don't have a LAN cable connection at the moment
