An "external reader" would be a computer. Remove the plate and connect it to another PC, either internally or via adapter via USB
or
start the laptop with a live CD (Linux), open disk contents, enter data, e.g. Copy to USB stick

If the data is not encrypted on it, yes. Otherwise, would have ran a specialist who then cracked the data. Would be e.g. For me then one thing I like to pay. Then the question arises whether the data is worth it:-)
