My notebook ThinkPad lenovo x61 has as a sole system Linux Ubuntu 18.04.
I want to install Linux Mint on an external medium, how should I do this? The medium has a size of 320 GB. Do I have to possibly remove the internal hard drive for installation on the external medium? I also own a new notebook which I use only for office work, the ThinkPad is only as a teaching and you. Exercise device serve.
I'm grateful for a successful answer for me!
Normal on the medium Install and also select the medium as installation location for the bootloader.
I want to install Linux Mint on an external medium, how should I do this?
There are exactly two things to watch out for:
Specify the correct device (here probably / dev / sdb [0-9]) to install on
For GRUB (the bootloader) also specify the right device.
Whether at 2. Also / dev / sdb is the right one depends on whether you want to start the installed system only s.den ThinkPad lenovo x61 or elsewhere.
If GRUB is installed in the MBR of / dev / sda, then the selection always appears on this laptop and fails to start Linux-Mint if the external data medium is not connected.
Any other system, e.g. Of course, another Linux or a Windows can be selected and started.
Do I have to possibly remove the internal hard drive for installation on the external medium?
No, not really, but if you do you exclude specifying a wrong device and data loss on it.
the ThinkPad should only be used as a teaching and Exercise device serve.
Why not then install it directly, so next to the existing Ubuntu?
