Laptop notification for audio detection?

I just have a little problem with my laptop (Windows 10) that I can't solve. My laptop has a single audio jack that I can use for both the microphone and the speaker. So far I was always shown a notification as soon as I connected a device, which asked what kind of device it should be recognized as. Strangely enough, this is no longer the case and I can no longer use a microphone, since apparently all devices are recognized as speakers by default. How can I solve the problem?
