Open documents with Open Office instead of Word?

I have a new laptop with Word preinstalled on it, but I haven't bought it and I don't intend to buy it because I can handle Open Office well. But I can't open all of my files because they are automatically opened with Word and I'm asked to pay without being able to use it (so I can't even copy the text and paste it in OO). Does anyone have any idea how to change that? Unfortunately I can't delete Word from the laptop, I've tried that too.

Right click on the file, select "Open with", select Open Office Writer and tick the "Always open with this program" check box, then you have to go.

Open Windows Explorer and select a Word file.

Open documents with Open Office instead of Word

Then open the Word symbol with the small arrow, select the option other app and click OpenOffice, activate the option "Imer this app…" and confirm with OK.

Thanks, now I know how to open it, but unfortunately I'm not shown any possibility that I can always open it with the program. It's probably due to my laptop. But that's how it works

Thank you, but unfortunately this is not displayed to me when I mark a file, Word opens automatically, I can't choose which program I want to open it with.

With Windows 10 you first have to go to "Select other app" at the bottom of the selection menu, then the option "always…" appears.

By the way, you can get rid of the pre-installed Windows (and other MS programs) with the tool that can be downloaded here from Microsoft:

You are not allowed to double-click, just click once. This works, it has nothing to do with your laptop.

Dr

Uh, of course meant the pre-installed WORD. Although some seem to be of the opinion that it is actually better to uninstall Windows at the same time. 😁

Dr

Yes, but right click once.

Please click with the left mouse button. Then you only marked the file, but did not activate an opening. Then you can proceed as described in my first answer. If you click the file with the right mouse button, you will open the context menu. Here you can also activate "Select other app" with "Open with" and proceed as described. So choose OpenOffice and set it as the default.
