How to recover / restore missing Excel file?

4 days ago I edited the last time a certain Excel file and then as usual (I think) closed everything. Today laptop made back to file away 😔 Last backup is of course already 3 months old on the USB stick.

Have a recovery wizard the file again, but when you open it says "… File format or file extension invalid…"

Can someone help me here? Use Windows 10 Home.

Search: * .xls *

Thank you for your answer. The allegedly restored file I see now, but it can't open. Date, size, etc. Fits, they do not stop. Error message is that the file format or file extension is invalid. Check if the file is corrupt and if the file extension matches the file format. Unfortunately I just have no idea what it means, or what I can do there?

Try for example Open with OpenOffice

Which OfficeVersion do you use?

Which ending does she have?
Memory maybe just a copy with an .xlsx or .xlsm extension.

Have you ever tried to open it from Excel, or alternatively from Explorer?

Or, as recommended by KHSchindelar, with Open Office or Libre Office?

In the File menu gabs times the point "last edited files". Depending on the setting there were 20-30 files stored, possibly in a context menu. Try to find something there!

But if that's the faulty one, you have bad cards. Sometimes you get this without formats or without formulas (only results) open.

Or download the free Libre Office, if you know the place LO can sometimes read things that xl does not "understand" itself.

Thank you all, unfortunately nothing has worked so far. My hard drive looks like it has damage. 😔
