Desktop empty but there are files in the folder?

So my father has the problem that nothing is displayed on his laptop on the desktop. Even after a restart. The files that are no longer visible are stored in the files folder under Dektop as normal. Whatever he has changed how can you get it back?

It's a Windows 10 laptop if that's important.

Is the trash also gone? If so, then he has hidden the symbols.

just right click on the desktop, then under View the last item: Show desktop icons. If there's no catch, you know what the problem is.

In the desktop right click → View → Show desktop icons Check in or out.
