Lightweight Linux distributions for very old PC's?

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop bought about 2006 and want to switch from the insecure Windows XP to Linux.

Only the system has about 500MB Ram and a 1 core AMD Sempron processor with an ATI Radeon XPress 200M GPU.

The system is so old that you can't boot over a stick. That's why I want to burn this to a CD. Only I have only 700MB blanks at hand.

Have already tried with BunsenLabs and Lubuntu. BunsenLabs crashes the computer after login and Lubuntu can't install, since it needs min 1GB Ram (according to installer).

Summarized:
I need a Linux distribution that:

does not eat more than 500MB Ram
32bit
On old AMD CPUs runs with 1 core
the ISO must not exceed 700MB
With user interface, browser, file manager and terminal

Bodhi Linux would be my first choice:

Runs on an old Amilo of Fujitsu (PAE problem can be circumvented). Do what it should… Hardware but very comfortable.

Thanks the system looks good. Where can I download it for 32bit systems? Do not find this on the page.

→ take legacy

But you could have found yourself within 10 seconds, right?

I would think the 1GB requirement only applies to the graphical installer in live mode. Once the system is installed, 512MB of RAM will work. So you need a distro with console installer. There are quite a few.

It gets more difficult with a distro that fits on a CD. There you could try the Alternate-Images, Lubuntu 18.04 still has some: https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Alternate_Installation/ Whether they fit with 715MB on a CD, you have to give it a try.

The ISO is unfortunately over 700 MB in size. So I can't get them on the blank. But thanks for the answer.

But of course you get it on a blank. Just have to choose the 90 minutes CD → 800 MB.

Was it also at Aldi… Or was it REWE? Did she ever bring me to a supermarket.

I have to see if I have larger blanks, because this blank has exactly 702MB. At the end I'm missing 13 MB.

Otherwise you can also look at Arch Linux. Of course, the installation runs on the console, but it has to do so with so little RAM either way. The ISO is under 600MB in size: https://archlinux32.org/download/

If you try and encounter difficulties during the installation, you are welcome to ask. Arch is a great system, even though it takes a lot of manual work during installation: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide

Only the system has about 500MB Ram and a 1 core AMD Sempron processor with an ATI Radeon XPress 200M GPU.

SliTaz
antiX
TinyCore
Vector
Puppy
Arch
Q4OS

would be some suitable candidates.

But have you ever thought about an expansion of memory, which brings a lot more options and speeds up the system?

I e.g. Have my laptop the maximum RAM and a SSD as well as new batteries and even a CPU transplant indulged to get all the power out, worked well.

Oh with such an old system, it is not worth upgrading the Ram. Have 5 PCs anyway which are much better.

The laptop is for my parents and they do not do much. At most check e-mails.

Lubuntu got to work on it, but thanks for your answer.
