My external hard drive is not recognized by my PC (via USB).

HOWEVER, the hard drive on my mother's laptop works.

I do not understand what can be the reason? Can someone please enlighten me and tell me what I can do.

Have a look in the hard drive partitions when the hard drive is plugged in and see if it is listed there

Unfortunately, it is not displayed anywhere. Checked Data Management, Device Manager, Devices and Printers. Really nowhere do you see the…

If the USB ports are at the front of the PC, it may be that the cables are not connected or have loosened (inside the PC)

It is also possible that individual USB controllers are defective. To test this, plug the hard drive into other USB ports as far away as possible from the one that does not recognize it.

And don't forget the extra power supply that is required by most external hard drives.

Tried other ports?

El

That helped! Thanks! The ports at the front both don't work, but it worked at the back!

If that was just a loose cable, everything is fine.

But if this is a defective USB port, you can expect other ports to break soon. So you should save up for a new motherboard.

I only used the 2 in the front, it finally worked in the back.

I notice that the hard drive is logging on and off alternately…

Then the front is probably not connected to the mainboard, you can do it if you feel like it.
