VPN and firewall?

If I have VPN on my laptop, is a firewall still worth it?

If so, what is the difference between a UTM firewall (hardware) and a firewall only as software?

VPN and firewall are completely different things.

A UTM is a device between the client and the network that can access and control the data stream. A specialized system then controls the data traffic for all clients in the local network.

A desktop firewall is running (if the user leaves it enabled) on the local client. Each client must then be administered alone.
