Explorer crashes when transferring files?

Moinsen people,

Since support for Windows 7 will be discontinued in a few days, I wanted to transfer some old videos and pictures to a newer laptop or to a hard drive.

Now there's an error message when transferring to a hard drive on the Windows 7 laptop in Explorer.

The Explorer crashes and is restarted.

Does anyone have experience with such problems or does anyone know what I can do to fix it?

Ha

What error message? There are people who can read Windows error messages.
Try copying with the Totalcommander (free for private use).

What is the error message?

Otherwise, do it via the CMD or another file manager, if necessary from a live system.

Yes, since there are some error messages in Windows, a more precise one would be helpful ^^

My

Try another hard drive.

I'm always amazed that there are still people who report an error message but never announce their wording.

Some of you can wave the wrecking ball and they don't hear the impact…

Entries in the context menu of the Windows Explorer could be responsible for this. You can check whether this is the case with the free ShellExView application.

You can download the application for free here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html (the download link is located far below)

When you run the program, you will probably see a rather long list. So go to Options at the top of the navigation and choose Hide All Microsoft Extensions.

Now press the key combination CTRL + A in the program to mark all entries. Then click on the red dot in the top left to deactivate everything. Finally, go to Options again and select Restart Explorer.

Then try again to see if you can now move files without Explorer crashing. If it works now, it is actually due to some entry in the context menu.

In this case you have to find out which entry it is. Therefore, only activate one entry at a time by clicking on the green dot. Then restart Explorer and move a file again. As soon as Windows Explorer crashes again, you have found the application that you should remove. So that the search does not take too long, I would first start with the unknown entries so that I can find the cause more quickly.

If the problem persists after that, I would look for faulty system files. Open the command prompt (cmd) as administrator and execute the command sfc / scannow.
