Very old laptop, which operating system?

I recently got a laptop with a very weak old Intel Atom processors and a RAM of 2GB in a 32 bit system. I've already installed a faster Hitachi SSD, but the laptop is way too slow for me. I had Windows 7 on it and to open Explorer / Browser it took times of around 20 seconds and the reaction speed when I clicked something was not better.

I could upgrade to 4GB, but that would be way too expensive because this RAM module would cost 80 euro or so on the used market.

I also updated to Windows 10 to see if it was faster there, but it was even worse there.

I already have a very powerful PC, but with this mini laptop I might be mobile, and I would like a writing program like Libre, I need software to view photos, for example Gimp, and if I could look something up in a browser it would be natural Excellent!

My question now is whether there's a 32 bit system there, which runs LIQUID in practice with only 2GB Ram. That would be really great, because I'm really sorry about this cute laptop

Try this Linux distribution… https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lite

This is especially intended for those switching to Windows and should work on your laptop.

More like xfce than cinnamon. He might not be able to pack the latter.

In any case, you should install a Linux. All Windows versions that can run on it are no longer supported.

Vmtl, Xubuntu or Linux Mint 20.1 Xfce is well suited for this.

Xfce is a surface that is aimed more at low-resource hardware. Alternative would be lxqt.

2GB Ram is really too little for current software, only Linux with xfce or lxde desktop would run, but extensive programs like Firefox and Libreoffice are on the limit.

Does the thing even run a 64 bit Linux?

If not, only Debian remains, which offer 32 bit images in the current version.
