Transfer hard drive to new laptop (USB)?

My laptop unfortunately gave up the ghost over the weekend. Now I need a new one as soon as possible.

The PC specialist advised me to sell my device as defective and to connect my hard drive to the new laptop via a USB adapter so that I could have my things on the new laptop.

my question is now how un (complicated) everything works. He mentioned that it might be difficult to get the data on the hard drive because I'm using Windows 10 with an Outlook account.
Have you had any experience with this method? Or can you explain how it works or how I can best do it? Can I just connect the hard drive with the adapter and drag everything onto the new laptop?
