A few years ago I wanted to install Tor on my old laptop (I did), but that only worked if I had four more (senseless, annoying) programs installed. If you unchecked the box, there was always an error message when installing Tor.
Is it still like that? I don't feel like viruses and mailware on my devices. What was the point? Otherwise, can't Tor finance it?

Especially since the installation / use of adware runs counter to the stated goal of the TOR project.
I think so. As I said, the laptop and the time period are years ago, but basically I only downloaded things from the original page or via chip.
