If the data on the laptop is no longer important, resetting would be a possible option.
And how does it work? The laptop was turned on once to set it up and never again. I can't access anything that can reset it. As I said, no start menu with the Shift key on the login screen.

You can still reinstall it with a Windows CD. You can download the image for this from any activated Windows 10 computer and flash it to USB / CD and then simply boot it from the drive via BIOS
Simply reinstall Windows 10, remember the password well.
Without a password, the computer can't be used, and finding out the password should be difficult.
With a Linux Live CD like Knoppix you can boot up the computer, because you have full access to the files in the computer.

Does the computer still have a CD / DVD drive? Then you should be able to get around with a freshly created offline NT Password & Registry Editor CD and the necessary RTFM around the password and use your parents' laptop again.
