ICloud - How to Synchronize Photos from Mobile Phone to Laptop but not the other way around?

I want all the photos I take with my phone to be displayed in my Photos gallery on my Mac, but not all 20,000 images in my photo gallery on my phone. What exactly are the settings on both devices? I need an explanation for dummies…

You'll need to download all the images to your Mac from the Photos app, or use the iCloud Photos Optimize Storage option, where the photos are not on your phone, just in the cloud and can be viewed as needed.
