Pep up your laptop?

We have a twelve-year-old laptop at home, which is why it no longer works so perfectly. Runs slowly and the screen is dark and slightly distorted and sometimes a bit blurred. But throwing it away is out of the question for us because it is not completely dead and can still be used. So my question, does anyone have any tips on how to pep up the old thing a bit?
