Hi, the laptop I have originally has Vista. Currently there's probably an unconfirmed Win7 version on it. I know that I should get myself an operating system, so that it works as well as possible.
Could I install Win8 or 8.1 on it (theoretically) or would that be too much for him?
First, download the iso file with Windows 10:
https://www.microsoft.com/.../windows10
Create a USB stick for installation.
Alternative → buy a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 (currently 18.99 euro):
https://www.amazon.de/...07GVNKZ9K/
Buy a license key (currently 7.54 euro):
https://www.amazon.de/...07423856K/
All data from the laptop to be preserved.
With the above stick a new and clean system play.
Since older Windows versions are not or only moderately supplied by Microsoft with updates I would do no experiments.
Very good and detailed answer.
Thanks - you do what you can ;-)
Complete instructions for installing the operating system are available on the Internet on various pages. See for example: https://www.pc-bauen.net/os-aufsetzen/
You can easily install Win8.1, but I think you do not really want that.
Windows 10 is better by far and a key is e.g. At https://mmo.ga/Fn3f already for under 16 euro to get.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, I think about everything. But I do not like Windows 10.
I would rather install a Linux distribution on it. For example, the official Ubuntu-devirat Lubuntu. This requires less system resources than Windows. Here is the download of the ISO: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/...p-i386.iso This is the current stable long-term support version. Burn this ISO with this tool http://www.freeisoburner.com/ to a blank DVD or if you boot from USB can use this tool https://www.balena.io/...io/etcher/ write the ISO to an empty USB stick.
Then boot the DVD or the stick. Just follow the instructions of the installer. It offers the possibility to completely delete the hard disk. I recommend a full installation. Firefox, libreoffice, multimedia components and tools will be installed. The Wi-Fi is also set up with. To do this, have network keys ready. After completing the installation and the first reboot, the Update Manager logs in the taskbar. One should install these updates. The update manager cares not only about the system but also about the installed programs. You do not have to update each program individually as with Windows. The update can also be automated so that it runs in the background.
And so you install programs under Lubuntu. Go to the Start menu> System Tools> Software. This is like an appstore.
If you really need the Flashplayer, go to the start menu> System Tools> Synaptic Package Management. There you look for flashplugin-installer and install it. This will set up a script that always automatically downloads and installs the latest Flash Player from the Adobe page. I can also recommend to install ttf-mscorefonts-installer. This installs the original Microsoft fonts like Arial, Times New Roman etc…
And so you always automatically get the latest Firefox. Go back to the Start menu> System tools> LXTerminal. This starts the command line. Enter here or copy & paste and close each with Enter:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: ubuntu-mozilla-security / ppa
sudo apt-get update -y
After a short time, the update manager logs in and offers the update of Firefox.
If a new stable long-term support version of Lubuntu appears, the Update Manager will also report that and offer an update. You do not need to reinstall anything.
Lubuntu goes off like a rocket and hardly scratching on the system resources. By comparison, Windows is a lame duck eating a lot of resources.
The 7,54 € license keys are illegal…
MICROSOFT SELLS ITS LICENSES FOR HUNDREDS OF Euro, WHERE CAN NO OFFER WITH 7.5Euro!
THIS IS OWNER'S LICENSE AGAINST THE USE OF MICROSOFT CORPORATION, BECAUSE SUCH VOLUME LICENCES HAVE ONLY BEEN BONDED TO HARDWARE, THE LICENSE WAS NOT PURCHASED (THUS ALSO NOT POSSIBLE), BUT ONLY THE PERMIT TO USE THIS!
YOU HAVE JUST RECOMMENDED CRIMINAL ACTIONS AND COUNTED WITH FREEDOM OF PENALTY.
Something like that, a Microsoft lawyer would say…

Note: In Germany, the purchase, distribution without binding to hardware and the use of OEM versions is completely legal (I ZR 244/97 dated 06.07.2000). OEM and retail versions are identical, but the only difference is the type of packaging.
But the Germans were lucky.
