Upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Win 7, purchased key (Win 7 professional) SKU does not fit, how do I continue?

I do not know how to continue. I have an older laptop that has Vista Home Basic on it and now wanted to give it to my daughter.

So that it can be connected to the net, I wanted to add Win 7 to it (then upgrade it with 10) and bought a used key (serious eBay dealer so far so well).

Have gone through all the steps (when asked about the system to be installed, I entered Win7 Home basic, since you can't upgrade your version with an upgrade) maybe there was an error or it doesn't work at all, but I don't have a license Found for Win7 Home Basic, it doesn't seem to exist here, only abroad.

In a nutshell, the installation went through in just over 3 hours, then the question of activation and entering the key, I did… Then I got the message that the SKU didn't fit.

Now to my question:

I can only click "continue", but without a key it will not work, or I can "skip"… But then I have the problem in 30 days because the program will probably be set without activation. I would love to do the installation (i.e. The upgrade) again and enter it professionally at the beginning to test whether this works, but how do I get out of this? Simply choking doesn't seem a good solution to me either.

The key will probably have been used elsewhere and is therefore useless.

Jo

I thought then another error message would come up, I googled that with the SKU and I think it is because of the wrong version

Jo

An ebay dealer doesn't break his ratings with something like that, does he?

He

What do you think what makes the reviews itchy? You buy reviews as a dealer if necessary.

First of all: If you have a product key for a specific version of Windows 7, you should also install exactly this when installing. The Windows 7 Home Basic is / was a slimmed-down Windows 7 and was mainly installed on netbooks.

maybe there was a mistake, or it doesn't work at all

I think that's exactly why. Download the "Universal PID Checker" and check the validity of the Windows 7 license. If everything is ok, you download the Windows 7 disk image and then install Windows 7 Professional.

Windows 7 support ends this month. So there will be no more security updates for Windows 7 in the future. So my tip to you: install Windows 10 instead of Windows 7. To activate it, simply use your existing Windows 7 product key.

If you don't want to install Windows 10 or the hardware is too weak, maybe consider a free derivative from the Linux world. For surfing and for office better than an OS without further support and missing security updates.

Last but not least: stay away from any dubious offers on eBay. Either pirated copies or licenses that are not intended for (on) sale. This includes So-called volume licenses. If it should be Windows 7, I would have a look at https://www.lizengo.de. So far only good experience.

Jo

Thanks for your answers.
Well, he already has a lot of very good reviews. Of course you can buy that… But never mind. Doesn't help me now. I can write to him.
Do you think it's really an already used key? And how should I proceed then, would be very grateful for help

He

Write to him and tell him the key doesn't work. You may get another one. Otherwise it does not help anything, then you will have to go shopping properly or not

Jo

I thought I had done the right shopping, sigh…
I just wrote. I'm curious about what's coming, but today I won't do anything anymore, should I now complete the installation by skipping? Not choking, right?

Jo

Oops, that's a lot of information, I have to digest it first,
Thank you for all the effort, I work my way through it

Jo

I wanted to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10,
I'm just downloading this checker and checking the key right away, but how do I continue with the installation that started?

Jo

This PID Checker, it says "valid", then it is valid, right?

Jo

Well, thanks for the tips, but now I have to go to bed, let's see what I do now

Dr

I wanted to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10,

You can save yourself that completely. Install Windows 10 right away and just enter your existing Windows 7 key to activate the product. That's it and not tying the unnecessary upgrade procedure to your leg.

this PID Checker, it says "valid", then it is valid, right?

Yes, then it is valid.
