Laptop overheated?

Some time ago I loaded a PC game onto my laptop. Yesterday, after almost a year, I felt like playing it again. However, the game has got a major update and my computer is already quite old, which means that it gets hot shortly after starting it.

Can you give me some tips to keep the old box from catching fire? Maybe you can adjust something in the settings of the game so that, for example, the graphics are reduced?

It is an option.

It could also be that the graphics card needs a new update or the working memory is insufficient or too many services are running in the background.
