How does W10 know the key after formatting and reinstalling the notebook?

I bought a notebook used. So first formatted completely and reinstalled Windows with the ISO file.

Now comes the strange, Windows knew after installing the key itself and the video driver, etc. Were already installed.

Now I ask myself how that can be. I previously formatted the hard disk several times and created new partitions.

I'm not sure, but I think that the hardware signature (motherboard) on the Windows servers is for exactly this purpose. The ddd explain why I after a hardware change a) had to enter the key and b) had problems with the activation.

Sa

OK, so I do not like that.

Ne

Why? What does that change?

Is in the TPM chip.

and no the server of microsoft knows only the key if you connect it with a mirocsoft account, the rest is simply calculated and written in the TPM. But it is also clear that mircosoft calls home.

but let it calm you, so you have a mobile you will be tracked everywhere anyway. No matter where a hotpsot or wlan is, tracking you is the easiest.

Just get used to it, what used to be since fiction is reality today and it's a lot worse than you can imagine.

See the answer from FresherKnilch: I think I'm wrong here. This with the BIOS makes perfect sense.

If you do not believe me, just watch the videos on ccc-media on youtube or on their website. That's all been known for a long time, the government just wants to tell you nothing, you lamb.

Sa

I read something about it in the wiki, so you can disable this chip as well? Well, I wanted to install W7 and Debian anyway. I just feel like w10 has no control over the system at all. Regarding the Mobile's, I have a Custom Rome without GApps, if that helps.

co

Do not help, believe the ccc, your händy is extremely noticeable.

So from 15:00 you go what your phone and the various WLANs do so.

There are 2 variants:

1) The laptop was sold with a preinstalled Windows 10, then the product key is permanently stored in the BIOS of the computer. With a new installation, the activation takes place automatically by reading the key (therefore there are no stickers with the key more).

2) The laptop had Windows 7 or 8.1 on purchase and was "upgraded" by the previous owner by the free upgrade to Windows 10. The original product key was converted into a so-called digital license, a product key is no longer available.

The Digital License is an ID that is generated by the built-in hardware and stored on the Microsoft Activation Server. This ID identifies exactly the computer during the reinstallation and automatically activates Windows 10 again.

You can reinstall Windows 10 as often as you like with both variants, the OS is automatically reactivated each time.

Sa

It is actually the 1st variant, namely found in the BIOS and the TPM chip.

The key is not stored in the TPM chip, that would not work, because not every computer has a TPM chip integrated. The key is stored in a special memory area of the BIOS / UEFI.

You can determine the true variant only as follows: a newly purchased computer with pre-installed Windows = variant 1

Variant 2: Upgrade from Win 7 / 8.1 to Windows 10

I'll add a third variant: You have bought an OEM product key or a retail version separately.
