XP x64 worked poorly more than it was due to a lack of real development by Microsoft. Especially since there was almost no real x64 application software in XP times.
With 64 bit, Microsoft only really improved from Windows Vista and even better from Windows 7.
Therefore I recommend (depending on the notebook) a Win-Vista or Win-7 - main installation in 64 bit, and to integrate an XP x86 - compatibility function into it by means of an old XP-x86 - license.
