Laptop with 2 graphics cards?

I have a question about laptops and their graphics cards.

I have the Intel Aspire 5 A517-52G and it comes with a dedicated graphics card (Nvidia GeForce Mx350), but it also has the integrated graphics card of the i7 (Intel Iris XE Graphics).

My question now, how does this work with 2 graphics cards? If only the GeForce Mx350 is used, both work together at the same time or a different graphics card always takes over, depending on the task.

Only the Mx350 is used. The integrated graphics of the processor is only used if no graphics card is available.
