We have DVDs from America at home. Unfortunately our DVD player can't play them. Is there a USB drive that can be connected to the laptop and read American DVDs?

There are 8 different region codes for DVDs worldwide. If the DVD drive is new, it will accept all of them. Then it remembers what DVDs were inserted and after little use it only reads DVDs that have the learned region code.

This usually doesn't bother you until a situation you describe arises.

Your DVD drive seems to have been trained with European DVDs.

https://www.amazon.de/...07GK23CTW/ I was looking for something here. The drive should only be there to play the American DVDs.

I ASSUME that any drive that is new will play the American DVDs. Amazon offers nothing from regional code.

To be sure, I would ask a question.
