Laptop screen goes black for a moment - applications continue to run, but nothing can be done?

For a few weeks now I have had a problem with my business laptop where the internal IT could not help me (or maybe it didn't want to?). My laptop is connected to a screen. When I work, the laptop screen starts to go black. All applications continue to run, but on the 2nd screen. I can do nothing while the screen is black. After about 2-3 seconds the picture is back to normal. However, this happens several times a day, which makes it very difficult to work. Strangely, this only happens when I type something on the keyboard, not when I do other things. Can anybody help me further? I don't know what to do anymore, that drives me crazy.

What kind of laptop is it? Brand or model name?

Fa

Lenovo ThinkPad T590 😅

According to the manufacturer, the laptop has two graphics cards installed. The first is the intel UHD 620, which is integrated in the processor and so to speak for standard applications.

Then he has another NVIDIA Geforce MX250, for more demanding tasks.

My guess is now that your laptop switches back and forth between the two graphics cards depending on the graphics performance required. The screen remains black for a moment. In principle it is a completely normal process and not a defect.

What you could try if it really bothers you so much that you right-click on the NVIDIA Control Panel on the desktop and see if you can disable NVIDIA there. Then he stays with the Intel UHD 620. Alternatively, you could look in the BIOS, although I would be careful if it is a business laptop.

Have a laptop with two graphics cards myself, that's exactly how it is. Even when I connect the charger, it switches to the more powerful Nvidia card.

Thanks for the tip! I've tried it, but unfortunately I can't find Nvidia.

Fr

Right click an empty spot on the desktop? Then there should actually be a small field and NVIDIA Control Panel should be in the lower third.

OK, I don't know now, since it is a business laptop, to what extent you are authorized to make changes in the system.

Fa

Yeah, probably not at all, that's the problem.

Fr

This is bad. Then you will not be able to change anything I believe.

Ne possibility would be that you look for the nvidia in the device manager under graphics card and deactivate it there. But if that's like me at work, then you don't have any permissions in the device manager.
