I can unfortunately no longer access my windows account on my old laptop, because I have forgotten my password and the email for it is never up-to-date, I still have a way to get it going again, important things are not on it?!
If there's no important data on it, the simplest solution is to reinstall the operating system.
Otherwise there are ways to lever out the PW:
There are various ways to bypass the password, but I come from the Linux side and Windows is not my thing. What would definitely work is to boot from a live usb to rescue data.
Do I then automatically need a new operating system or do I have to buy one or how do I do that?
Depends on. If you want to install Windows again, you'll need to buy a license. Linux, on the other hand, is free.
If you have an old license (product key), you can of course use it.
You can load Linux onto a USB stick and then start the laptop via the operating system on the stick. There you can then hack something and then you have the password. There are videos on yt. It's not illegal, provided it's really your laptop
