This refers to all drives that use optics to read the data. Just the whole laser stuff.

Yes. There's no new technology here so far. In addition, drives are increasingly disappearing from laptops as well as stand-alone PCs as more and more digital media is used.

The most modern are M2 SSDs or PCI Express drives but as I said your question does not really make sense?
I think newer laptops will often not have an optical drive because there are practically no useful applications for it today.
