I get a laptop for Christmas and would like to connect my switch there. Is that just possible with HDMI or is that not possible?

Via expensive detours with a USB capture card and another program. This intercepts the HDMI signal from the switch and brings it in via USB.
A simple monitor is cheaper, but you should make sure that the monitor has speakers. Or a jack output for headphones, so you can connect speakers to it.
