Our i5 laptop ran on Win7 and has been updated to Win10 via the internet. Now it is getting slower and slower (as usual) and I would like to set it up again or "reset" it. How does that work with such a constellation?
Make data backup
Load the MediaCrationTool at Microsoft and have a USB stick prepared and then start a complete new installation
I would have done a clean reinstallation of Windows 10 after upgrading Windows 7. Anyway: You can download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and use it to create an installation disk (DVD or USB stick) for Windows 10 and then reinstall it.
You can download the Media Creation Tool here: https://www.microsoft.com/.../windows10
Run the program and follow all the steps. With a DVD, it just downloads an ISO file that you still need to burn. There's the option "Burn disk image" directly under Windows if you right-click on the downloaded ISO file.
If you choose a USB stick instead, you just have to follow all the steps and at the end you have a usable stick for reinstallation.
Then boot from the created installation disk by inserting the DVD into the drive or inserting the USB stick into one of your USB slots and then restarting your laptop. If your laptop starts up as usual, you have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS beforehand: https://praxistipps.chip.de/...ehts_10161
Then follow all steps of the installation process. Select Custom as the installation type and delete all existing partitions in the partition manager. Remember that everything will be deleted! If a partition is called "Recovery" or something like that, you don't have to delete it. Unless you don't need them anyway, which is the case with me. I don't need them because I always reinstall from a disk and the recovery partitions are usually out of date.
At the end there should only be one entry with unallocated space. Possibly two if two hard drives are installed. In such a case, select the desired hard drive for the installation.
You now go to "Next" at the bottom right, whereupon the installation begins. The rest is then self-explanatory. It is not necessary to enter the product key.
After the reinstallation you should first install all necessary or missing drivers and the latest Windows updates.
You can easily create an installation medium for each Windows 10 edition + language.
And with the reinstall.
As usual with Microsoft, activation is a bit annoying. However, it should recognize online that this PC has already had 10 and then activate itself.
For me, reinstalling the old one works without any problems, since Windows 8 was originally on it.
@ Lukas: You were surprised that I had not freshly installed Win10. The update went through the Windows website. Or I can download a clean Win10 image
In general, of course I could write an iso image, but then I only document the status Q and not a clean basic medium, or do I see it wrong.

I would download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft directly. You can also upgrade immediately. You don't need a USB stick. https://www.microsoft.com/.../windows10
If you should need a license key that should be secure and inexpensive, I recommend from good experience: https://www.softwaremarkt24.de/
Which upgrade? He already has Windows 10. He doesn't need a product key either.
I know how the upgrade is going. Personally, I would have reinstalled Windows 10 afterwards, as I said, but it is not a must. You do that now.
I don't know what your question is now. You don't need to download an image. You use the Media Creation Tool and create a bootable stick by simply following all the steps as I have described.
