When I'm on my laptop on the Internet and have several pages open, the pages I'm not currently updating or updating are always updated. How can I disable this?
have a Windows laptop (Alienware)
No idea, but if they do, they are still open in the background.
But my 13 year old HP EliteBook has no problems with that. At least does not affect my performance on the Web.
That's what makes every smartphone the same, and they're half as fast.

The update does not take place until I'm back on one of the pages. Example I'm on eBay, write something in there, change the page briefly, go back to eBay and the page reloads and everything I've written is gone
