If I connect the charging cable to my laptop there's "via power supply" does that mean that it is now charging or that the battery is no longer used but the power is used directly from the charging cable?
You can't say that directly, because it is different from laptop to laptop. If you have the option to remove the battery by two clips below and your laptop continues to charge, you know it runs on the power supply. But there are also laptops because it runs on the battery.

Would estimate it still runs on the battery. Like with a cell phone when it is charging and being used at the same time.
