Many years ago I bought a serial number for the MS Office package of a license return. I only had to download, install and activate the package itself from the MS homepage. Works perfectly!
Now I have to hard reset my laptop and have misplaced the serial number.
How can I legally get MS to work again with my serial number after the reset?
If you need the serial number, it will be included, otherwise the product can't be used. There are also versions that run without a serial number.

no chance after that, says the article and I think Heise has tried a few things.
The activation is permanently saved in your Microsoft account. To do this, go to https://setup.office.com/ and then simply select "Install using your Microsoft account". Then you can download and install it again. It is then activated again automatically without having to enter the key.
