Foreign WLAN problems and questions?

I share the Wi-Fi with neighbors. Legal and agreed. The master of the router has now opened two different access points. I have no idea how to do it. In any case, one of them is normally specified with WLAN (number) and transmits at 5 GHz and the other is specified with a name that apparently runs over the receiver and transmits at 2.4 GHz.

Question A)

Strangely enough, my laptop does not receive the 5 series. My smartphone does. How is that possible? Why is that?

Question B)

Since my laptop can receive the receiver access… Is it then possible that you can see my history on the net? Or is that not possible via normal WLAN?

He means his WLAN card / stick, is also a recipient, he is 50% right:-)

Rh

To a: Perhaps the laptop can't yet 5GHz. Maybe look at the technical data of the WLAN adapter or in the device manager in the appropriate settings.

To b: Yes, he could see which pages you are on. The remedy could be the use of a VPN.

Ma

Buy a "Dual Band WLAN Stick" for your laptop, problem solved.

Your history is not sent through the network, your neighbor may see when you are active in the router, but nothing more

st

A:

Your smartphone probably has the technical standard to receive 5 GHz networks, but your laptop does not. As long as you have reception, this is not something that should affect your business.

B:

Yes, he can. At least when you are traveling on HTTP pages or communicating unencrypted.

Answer to question A)

Your WLAN card in the laptop is not suitable for 5 GHz reception or transmission. Therefore, you should find the manufacturer and model and which WLAN chip was installed so that you can read in the specifications what this chip can and what can't.

Answer to question B)

Yes and yes, they can

And how can I prevent you from seeing my progress? I thought you could only see when I'm online. But not where.

How do I set up something? I have windows 8.1

Ma

This can't be prevented since it is part of the router's logging so that Follow-up can also be done in case of problems e.g. Violation of various legal requirements. You could disable this in the router or configure it accordingly, but this is more the decision of the owner whether he wants to do it or not. You can't force him to do it.

Would a VPN change anything? What is it good for?

Ma

Would a VPN change anything? What is it good for?

No

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network

Unfortunately, this does not change either, since all access and log-ins can be tracked in the router.
