My desktop PC has become too old and underachieving. I've been thinking about buying a laptop or tablet and using it as a desktop replacement. By this I mean especially to connect it to 2 external monitors, mouse, keyboard, etc. Is that possible or are these devices rather not designed for it?
With the laptops it is generally possible, with Tablets you must watch out.
Android tablets and iPads are not or only partially able to do so, not all software that runs on the PC does not work. Most PC programs are not available or only in limited versions.
Tablets like the Surface Pro, on the other hand, are capable of something like that. It is almost a Windows computer in tablet design. The Surface Pro has a dock, a kind of distributor to which you can connect screens and input devices. This dock is then connected to the surface with a cable. That means you would only have to plug in or unplug this one cable if you want to use the surface on the desktop or if you want to take it back with you.
But as a warning: This is all very expensive.
The cheaper option would be a normal laptop with USB-C, because such docks are not only for the Surface, but also for USB-C.
Great, I'll look for it.
As far as I know, a laptop can't be pimped up as you intended. This does not give the hardware and the number of connections yet.
You can only imagine a division of labor for laptop and desktop.
With a good laptop you can do all Internet activities and keep the contact to the outside via internet.
You can only use the desktop PC as a better typewriter and use it for the administration and mass storage of pictures, documents and so on. So only a discharge of the laptop.
With external hard drive or stick or memory card you switch between the two with the data back and forth.
But it will not work that well. Sooner or later, you will do everything with the laptop.
That's how it happened to me. In the end, with a heavy heart, I dumped my two desktops, even though pimping had cost a lot of money. But the limit was reached. Even another laptop I have to put back in reserve because even the operating system with its constant updates eats up many reserves and has slowed down the workload so massive.
That's just the passage of time. The demands are increasing and you have to always follow the hardware, if you want to continue to do this.
So, recently switched to my laptop for exactly the same reason, because it's just faster and more efficient than the desktop PC.
I bought a dock (HP 3005pr). On this is a screen, keyboard, mouse, Internet and various other USB devices connected. A second screen is connected to my laptop. This gives me exactly 3 cables directly to my laptop, which makes it still mobile, since I do not have to connect tens of cables. Great thing. I'm very pleased.
