Best technology for university?

I'm going to start studying soon and am looking for a good laptop / computer system. So I have just planned to buy a small laptop such as the windows surface 3 (I still have to see which one I get) and a screen and then I can take the little laptop with me to university and read texts etc. On the Write screen.
However, there are also tablet laptops like the windows Surface Pro 7. Is it more practical to buy a tablet or a laptop? So what are your experiences?

I just thought that it was kind of inconvenient, because then you can't use the tablet for other things, like cutting holiday films or sorting pictures and such. So I would not only use the small laptop for university stuff, but also do my private things with several hard drives, including computer games and such.
I tend to prefer a convertible laptop with a touch, because you can use it like a tablet, right? But the Surface 3 isn't convertible, right?
Or is it more practical to have university things and private things separated, i.e. To use 2 things?

Do you have any tips regarding the new technology, apps, etc?

Ho

To write down information and to edit PDF files etc. I use an iPad Pro 12.9 "with Apple Pencil. It's just extremely convenient, I don't have to carry any folders or documents with me. I put my iPad in my backpack and that's it. I use GoodNotes as an app.

I've been using it for over 2 years and never had any problems.

Backups go to the cloud and locally, so that I always have everything as a PDF.

It also synchronizes with my iPhone so that I can quickly read something on the go without having to take out the iPad.

In general, there are many options, for example you could also use a Lenovo convertible or - as you have already described yourself - a device from the Surface family.

In principle, however, I only have the iPad for university / school. I also use an HP laptop with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD for mobile use, which I can also take with me if necessary.

I have several computer systems that I can fall back on, so I can only recommend that you try out a lot yourself. Everyone is a little different in their workflow.

I would definitely make sure that you have enough options for data backup. If the data is lost due to damage, you usually have a really big problem. Here you should definitely pay attention, it saves lives ;-)
