Removed notebook hard drive boots via USB only until troubleshooting. Why does not Windows 10 boot anymore?

I removed the hard drive from an older Asus notebook and replaced it with an SSD. However, if I connect the old hard drive via a docking station via USB to the notebook and only boot from it, only the Windows troubleshooting will appear. Internally, the record ran flawlessly.

A system recovery, but also other "repair options" are usually blocked here with an error message.

What fundamental mistake do I make? Or. What can I do, so that Windows also via the docking station, ie externally, starts normally? I did not make any changes to the boat sector.

You're trying to start a Windows installation that was once installed on direct SATA drivers for the disk via USB. That can't work. Even Win10 does not like a permanent installation on a USB disk.

For this special case, there's the so-called Windows To Go…

Thanks for this info. Would cloning be possible after all? For example, When I boot over Clonezilla? I would like to transfer only a single partition (where Windows is on it) to the slightly smaller SSD.

Whether the cloning will be successful now I can't guarantee. Just try it.
