Convince father to format PC?

Also… My father once bought a laptop and he downloaded something and he is infected with a virus 😂😭 it has happened to him several times and he always asked a colleague but now he has no more contact with him and he says for 5 years that he wants to fix the laptop but still hasn't done anything. Now I finally wanted to format the PC myself, or better said the hard drive, to delete this stupid virus, but somehow my father is not yet convinced of the idea because there's his data and such on it and you also have to get a Windows 10 key buy… Do you have any ideas / arguments to convince him?

Em

I don't know Windows 10, but you can download Windows 7 from the Internet and then save it as an iso file on a usb stick.A program can be used to convert the test version to the complete version.Ask your friends who are familiar with PCs, they must have a test version

Yes, but how can I convince him?

La

You also have to buy a Windows 10 key

No, you don't have to!

There are virus scanners online that also fight viruses. Just see if formatting is necessary at all.

my

Yes, but how can I convince you! (sry because of freaking out)

La

You are welcome to freak out, I don't see you jumping in a triangle with a red head 😉.

Remove the virus, save its data on an external data carrier and you will convince him with it too.

The only way to get rid of a virus is to format the disk.

Otherwise, once a virus, always a virus, because you can never get rid of it properly and you can never be sure whether it is really gone…

So you are right, all data must go.

Just make a compromise… You buy an empty hard drive case for a mobile hard drive. You remove the virus-infected hard drive from the PC and insert it into the external housing…

In the computer you build a new, preferably SSD…

The Win10 key is saved in the BIOS, so you don't need to buy a new Windows 10 for a new installation, as it was already activated.

Then reinstall Windows and install a current virus scanner. Only then do you plug the infected disk into the PC and see what data you still need… You transfer the data to the new SSD and when you have pulled everything over, you format the old disk…

Then you have a faster PC and an external disk for data that does not have to be on the computer…

El

Once a virus, always a virus, especially if you first have to install the scanner…

my

Oke thank you 😁

El

A system that has been compromised is never secure again - unless you erase the disk.

La

It depends on the virus

El

Yes, that's right, but do you know how many fours have been caught when a virus appears?

Possibly all pictures and other data are already encrypted. Nobody needs that. Then rather the method that I recommend in my comment…

La

Yes I know. I got tons of viruses, Trojans, etc. From a friend. Away.

El

And were you 100% sure afterwards that all viruses were gone? Or only those who make themselves noticeable and not all the keyloggers and those who transmit the screen… - unnoticed…

La

Yes I was. But it took over 2 hours.

El

Well then, restarting Windows takes a maximum of 20 minutes…
